"It’s heartfelt," he added, "My direction from council is to make that real."

The grant will primarily support the expansion and implementation of remote site incubators (RSIs), a critical tool in the ambitious restoration strategy. Jordan Ortega elaborated on their function: RSIs consist of sets of panels, each roughly the size of a natural salmon redd, that are strategically placed in the river. These innovative devices mimic the optimal conditions necessary to support thousands of fertilized salmon eggs, providing crucial protection from predation and other environmental threats during their vulnerable early developmental stages. "The goal is to establish these remote site incubators across a wide range of thermal and flow regimes," Ortega explained.
