While the fire’s origins are allegedly linked to an arsonist apprehended on Monday near Riverside State Park, it rapidly consumed homes in Spokane’s northwest corner. As of Monday afternoon, reports indicated that between 700 and 1,100 structures were lost across three ongoing fires: the Old Trails fire, the Autumn Lane Fire in the Suncrest area, and the Fairview Fire in Mead. Collectively, these fire perimeters spanned over 10,000 acres by Tuesday, according to data shared via Watch Duty, an app that aggregates human-collected wildfire information. Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown described the events as "the worst natural disaster the region has faced."
These destructive fires are occurring within what fire experts term the "wildland-urban interface" (WUI), characterized by high fire risk where human dwellings intermingle with natural fuels such as trees, grasses, and brush. FEMA defines this zone as the area between unoccupied land and human development. While the term often evokes images of remote mountain towns or rural homesteads, the Old Trails fire has starkly redefined this concept, demonstrating that the wildland-urban interface extends significantly into suburban landscapes.

These same powerful winds fueled other wildfires across north-central Washington, including the Sinlahekin Fire, which approached 74,000 acres by August 3rd, the Little Giant Fire, which expanded across Lake Chelan over the weekend, and the Kaiser Canyon Fire, which had consumed over 136,000 acres on the Colville Indian Reservation as of this report.
