This particular strip of land has historically been celebrated as one of Utah’s prime locations for fruit cultivation, benefiting from the moderating influence of warm canyon winds, an ideal elevation above the coldest valley air, and rich, loamy soil. In bygone eras, the Orem and Provo areas were blanketed with orchards before urban sprawl claimed the landscape. Yet, despite this advantageous setting, Crandall has experienced a 100% loss of his peach crop. He remains uncertain whether his popular fruit stand will even open this season, holding onto a sliver of hope for a salvageable apple harvest, though peaches are his primary and most sought-after product. Larger operations, such as the 600-acre Allred Orchards, a multi-generational enterprise focusing on peaches and apples, have already announced a complete closure for the year, unable to absorb the financial impact of zero yield.
While late frosts have always been an inherent risk in fruit farming, the sheer magnitude of this year’s losses is being described by growers as nearly unprecedented. In response to the widespread devastation, Utah Governor Spencer Cox declared a state of emergency on May 15th, facilitating access to crucial financial aid, including low-interest disaster relief loans for agricultural producers. The impact of these climatic anomalies is not confined to Utah; other fruit-growing regions in the Western United States are also grappling with similar challenges. In northern-central Utah, peaches are typically among the first tree fruits to herald the arrival of spring, their blossoms painting the landscape in vibrant shades of pink. A dozen varieties ripen sequentially from August through September, creating a six-week period of abundance characterized by the sweet, sun-kissed fruit. However, the very characteristic that makes peaches so desirable – their early blooming – also renders them more susceptible to late frosts compared to fruits like apples and pears. Peach blossoms and developing fruits can be damaged or killed at temperatures as low as 28 degrees Fahrenheit, and a drop to 25 degrees Fahrenheit can decimate an entire crop within hours.
