Instead, on this deceptively cool spring afternoon, Crandall, whose family has cultivated this land for nearly 150 years, found himself searching for surviving fruit amidst the verdant foliage. Gesturing to a branch that, in a typical year, would be laden with dozens of developing peaches, he lamented, "I’m still looking for one." This stark reality is shared by tree fruit growers across Utah, who are reporting devastating harvest losses approaching 95% statewide.

The agricultural community has been battered by a confluence of extreme weather events, beginning with one of the warmest and driest winters on record for the state. This mild winter lulled orchards into an early awakening, a phenomenon exacerbated by a subsequent record-breaking spring heatwave that triggered blooming three weeks ahead of schedule. However, this premature blossoming left the delicate fruit vulnerable, as a series of severe April freezes followed, decimating the nascent crops. Matt Hargreaves, vice president of communications for the Utah Farm Bureau, confirmed the grim assessment after touring orchards and speaking with numerous growers, a figure echoed by multiple farmers interviewed.

Crandall’s 20-acre farm, situated on the Orem benches, is land that his great-grandfather homesteaded in the 1880s. Historically, this area, nestled against the Wasatch Mountains and benefiting from warm canyon winds, has been considered prime fruit-growing territory in Utah. Its elevation, just above the valley floor where cold air tends to settle, and its rich, loamy soil, a legacy of ancient Lake Bonneville, create ideal conditions. In previous eras, orchards carpeted much of Orem and Provo before urban sprawl transformed the landscape. Yet, despite this advantageous location, Crandall reported a 100% loss of his peach crop, leaving him uncertain whether his popular fruit stand will even open this season, though he harbors a sliver of hope for his apple harvest. Larger operations, such as the 600-acre Allred Orchards, a multigenerational farm specializing in peaches and apples, have already announced they will remain closed for the entire year due to the widespread crop failure.

While late frosts have always posed a risk to fruit cultivation, the magnitude of this year’s losses is described by growers as nearly unprecedented. In response to the widespread devastation, Utah Governor Spencer Cox declared a state of emergency on May 15th, aiming to facilitate access to financial relief, including low-interest disaster loans, for affected agricultural producers. The impact of these weather anomalies is not confined to Utah; growers in other Western states have also faced significant challenges. Colorado’s Western Slope experienced substantial freeze damage in its peach orchards, while California’s Central Valley, after enduring record spring heat, is anticipating an unusually early peach harvest, a contrast to the widespread frost damage seen elsewhere.

In north-central Utah, peaches are traditionally among the first tree fruits to herald the arrival of spring, their blossoms painting the landscape in vibrant pink hues. The region typically enjoys a six-week harvest season, beginning in August, yielding a diverse array of varieties. Redhavens, known for their crimson skins and tender flesh, are usually the first to ripen, followed by the sweet John Boys, the firm Diamond Princesses, and the versatile golden Lemon Elbertas, prized for canning. The season often culminates with O’Henrys, a highly sought-after variety for fresh consumption.

However, the very characteristic that makes peaches so desirable – their early blooming – also renders them particularly susceptible to late frosts. Peach blossoms and developing fruits can be severely damaged or killed at temperatures as low as 28 degrees Fahrenheit, with a drop to 25 degrees capable of wiping out an entire crop within hours. Crandall noted that his fruit trees had already fully bloomed when the freezing temperatures arrived, with cherries reaching the size of small peas. He had observed early signs of an unusually warm winter, with buds appearing as early as January, which foreshadowed the potential for such a disaster. "We knew that it would be almost a miracle for us to have a full crop," he recalled. Prior to a significant freeze in mid-April, he estimated that the orchard still held about half a peach crop and healthy apples, but in a devastating two-hour period, most of that potential was lost.

The phenomenon of earlier plant development is increasingly being linked to climate change, which is contributing to warmer springs across Utah and the broader Western United States. This trend lengthens the period during which sensitive fruit crops are exposed to the risk of frost damage. Dr. William Anderegg, a climate scientist at the University of Utah, explains that while it’s impossible to attribute a single frost event solely to climate change, the overall warming trend "loads the dice," increasing the probability of damaging frosts. Scientists have documented this phenomenon across thousands of plant species, observing an earlier awakening of vegetation in response to rising global temperatures.

When frost warnings are issued, fruit farmers employ various strategies to mitigate potential damage. Large-scale operations often utilize wind machines to circulate warmer air from higher altitudes down into the orchards, supplemented by propane heaters to further raise temperatures. Irrigation systems at the base of trees can also help, as the process of water freezing releases latent heat, providing a degree of warmth.

He estimates a 95% loss across his various crops, including peaches, cherries, nectarines, pluots, and apples. The economic and human toll of this year’s crop failure has been profound. Riley Orchards relies on the federal H-2A visa program for seasonal labor, typically bringing back the same experienced farmhands year after year. Following the devastating loss, Riley was forced to send 11 of his 15 workers back to their home countries, a decision that deeply affected him. To support his remaining staff and his family, Riley has taken a temporary summer job delivering equipment for a local dealership, aiming to avoid drawing income from the farm. The absence of work for his valued employees was a difficult consequence of the crop failure.

Despite the absence of a harvest, essential orchard maintenance continues. Tasks such as pruning, spraying, and watering are critical to ensuring the health of the trees and safeguarding future crops, even in the face of this year’s financial shortfall. Crandall, a retired schoolteacher, is already looking ahead to the next growing season. He views his role not just as a steward of the land but as a vital part of the community, recognizing the importance of the brief interactions with customers who visit his farm stand. This year, however, the absence of fruit may mean fewer visitors and diminished opportunities for those connections. Nevertheless, the trees themselves remain resilient, and both the peaches and their eager consumers will patiently await their return.
